Official Scoring Rules

There are two main score systems: territory scoring (the traditional Japanese method) and stone or area scoring (the Chinese method). Tempo Game Clock uses the Chinese method by default, assigning one point each for a Stone and an Empty Point. If you want to use territory scoring (Japanese method), change the value of a Stone to negative one (-1) by going to Edit -- Game Type Attributes -- Piece Names and Score Points .

  • Territory scoring (Japanese traditional method) - In territory scoring, a player's score is determined by the number of empty locations that player has surrounded minus the number of stones their opponent has captured. Typically, counting is done by having each player place prisoners in the opponent's territory and rearranges them into easy-to-count shapes as much as possible.
  • Stone or area scoring (Chinese traditional method) - In stone or area scoring, a player's score is determined by the number of stones that player has on the board plus the empty area surrounded by that player's stones.
