On occasion the monthly Microsoft Windows Update, may alter settings in the Windows audio/video OS layers. This can result in settings that alter your K-Lite settings. It may manifest with symptoms like: No sound, video issues, and/or some file formats not playing at all (ex. MP3s, MP4, etc).
Restoring your K-Lite settings (step 2), may be all that is needed so you may want to just try that first since it only takes a few clicks if you have a settings back-up.
Running the Windows Troubleshooter will restore the OS audio/video settings to its default state so that standard Windows supported formats will play. It only takes a couple minutes. To use the Troubleshooter, follow these steps:
After completing the Troubleshooter, you will need to restore your K-Lite settings for Video Mill compatibility.
If you have previously backed-up your K-Lite Settings, Restore can be done in a few clicks. Open the K-Lite Tweak Tool (Run-As Administrator), then click the Restore Settings button.
If you do not have a back-up of your K-Lite Settings, the settings steps for Video Mill are listed on the KLite Codec Pack Configuration page (see Table 1. Links to KLite Screen Shots). After making the tweaks, remember to save a back-up of the settings via the K-Lite Tweak Tool Back-Up Settings button.
If the above steps fail to restore Video Mill to working order, you may need to download and reinstall K-Lite. It's a good practice to install the latest version anyway because they are always making the codecs better (performance improvements, new options, and fixing issues). There is a download link and instructions on the KLite Codec Pack Configuration page.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (build 1709)
Thursday October 26th 2017
A tip for those who have already updated to the latest build of Windows: a lot of things are reset to default values when installing big Windows updates. For example thumbnail settings and various codec related tweaks. We recommend to run the K-Lite installer again to re-apply your preferred settings. It is not needed to uninstall first. If you have made any additional customizations with the Codec Tweak Tool, then you need to redo those tweaks as well.
